The Imprisoned Ghosts of the Williamsburg Public Gaol

A two story brick building greets guests strolling through the cobblestone streets on the east end of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. From the outside, the 300 year old Public Gaol looks quaint and quiet. Yet some of the most feared pirates, traitors, thieves, and mentally insane used to sit incarcerated inside its chambers. According to those who visit today, the ghosts of the criminals continue to haunt the former colonial jail.

When Williamsburg became the capital of the Virginia colony in 1699, a man named Henry Cary oversaw the construction of a jail to imprison corrupt officials and other criminals. The new public jail originally had three rooms, two for prisoners and the other for the guard, or gaoler.

Later, city officials realized the jail required expansion to hold the increasing number of convicted thieves, runaway slaves, and spies. In 1703, the building expanded to include an exercise yard, a “Debtor’s Prison” in 1711, and a separate living quarters for the gaoler in 1722.

The conditions of the prison made it very uncomfortable for the inmates. Prisoners ate overly salted beef or soggy peas. The cold, damp weather and insufficient insulation caused many to freeze to death. Typhus, otherwise known as “Gaol Fever” infected inmates and the guards alike.  Yet some of the jails more notorious prisoners may have earned such harsh conditions.

The Bloodthirsty Blackbeard and His Crew

Of all the inmates, perhaps the most infamous came from the pirate Blackbeard’s crew. Until his death in 1720, Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, became one of the most feared pirates, terrorizing and raiding ships along the colonial coastline. Blackbeard captained his ship Queen Anne’s Revenge along with a crew of ruthless pirates. Yet, that all changed when Virginia governor, Alexander Spotswood, had had enough, and sent Lieutenant Robert Maynard to arrest the outlaw and his cronies.

Lieutenant Maynard faced off against Blackbeard in a bloody hand-to-hand confrontation that would leave Blackbeard dead at 38. Then the lieutenant took the pirate’s head and mounted it on a stick to warn pirates of their imminent fate.

Maynard managed to capture the surviving fifteen members of Blackbeard’s crew. Blackbeard’s henchmen awaited trial in the cells of Williamsburg’s Public Gaol. On March 12th, 1719, “one was acquitted, one pardoned and the rest sentenced to hang.”

The Scalptaker

Another scandalous prisoner who ended up incarcerated in the Williamsburg Public Gaol included Virginia’s own former governor, Henry Hamilton. Governor Hamilton received the nickname “The Scalptaker” after rumors spread that he bought the scalps of dead settlers from the local Native Americans.

Eventually in 1779, Colonel George Rogers Clark arrested Governor Hamilton. Despite his prominent political position, Hamilton suffered the same unfavorable conditions as the other inmates. He shared a tiny cell with six other prisoners, forbidden from using pen and paper.

The Haunted Jail

After 300 years, Colonial Williamsburg’s Public Gaol has seen quite a few souls pass through its doors. The spirits of the old inmates continue to serve their sentence even in death. According to an account from Williamsburg’s Colonial Ghost Tour:
“I went in there and I felt really, really, like there was something wrong, like something’s in there. I walked in further and further until I got to the very end where I could barely see light coming out from the door I walked in. I noticed the chains moving and the ball, because it’s the ball and chain that hangs on a wall, and I noticed it was moving and I was like that’s kinda cool.”

Do the former inmates of the Public Gaol remain trapped inside the cells? Those who want to see for themselves can tour the old jail which remains open to the public.

Spirit Contact: Are we intruding and bothering the spirit world?

We've heard from time to time from mediums that some ghosts are tired of the constant attempts to communicate with them and we have to wonder if this may be true in some cases? In some instances the spirit world may be happy to know that someone is acknowledging them and may have messages of value to impart, but how about others? For instance, the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast in Fall River Massachusetts has been deluged with investigators, psychics, and every quija board carrying ghost enthusiast imaginable.

No doubt hundreds have come to that place to find evidence of spirit activity and existence. So whatever happened to "Rest in Peace" and does it irritate the spirits in this B&B? Psychic Amy Allen alleged so in an episode of the Dead Files, and it is worth considering. So what say our readers? Do you think the spirits are bothered with the constant investigations, the constant demands to "touch someone" or "make a sound" or ? Please weigh in..

SyFy's Haunted Collector

English: Syfy LogoEnglish: Syfy Logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)One show that we've been keeping an eye on has been SyFy's Haunted Collector. Have you tuned in? If you're not familiar with this show, here's a brief rundown.

Haunted collector John Zaffis along with  his family are paranormal investigators, that take a special interest in investigating various items that come into the possession of people that believe their items may have a haunted paranormal association of some sort.

Many of the items are antiques, old pieces that hold some sort of  connection with a spirit from the other side or so the Zaffis family says. The Zaffis family claims to come in, do an investigation, verify that the old item has bad spirit mojo and remove them from the home to be stored in the Zaffis family museum.

The show is fairly educational as well, we know a little more about antiques :P, and has gotten better as it has gone on. Tune in and tell us what you think?

Fact or Faked: Florida Woodlands UFO evidence

Fact or Faked: Paranormal FilesFact or Faked: Paranormal Files (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

We love all things paranormal and we have high but reasonable expectations when it comes to shows that deal with the paranormal. However, there comes a time when our frustration gets the better of us and a little rant may be in order. In walks  SyFy channel's Fact or Faked. Sighhhhhhhhh....here's what drives TPB blog writers batty..and it's a short drive believe it..

We're all for debunking. In fact, we're hard core skeptics. We want proof and we want good proof. What drives us nuts is the experiments that often border on the utterly ridiculous that the SyFy Fact or Faked team often conjure up. It's tedious, often stupid, and more than not, a complete waste of time. The Lizard man experiments were laughable. The haunted cat experiments were laughable. Ok, rant over.

Now on to what we liked about the latest episode. The Florida Woodlands episode that aired 6/5/2012. The  UFO footage they recently captured was pretty conclusive to us, what do you think, our readers? Was that impressive or what? It blew us away and we weren't the only ones.

**Paranormal State Fraud?

Paranormal StateImage via Wikipedia
If you have been researching all of the shows on television today looking for legit ghost busting, you more than likely have run across a lot of stories about Paranormal State and claims of fraudulent acts associated with the show. The allegations run long and deep about this show and it's credibility.
Allegedly two shows in particular have come under fire, "The Messenger" and "Hell House" which are rumored to have been pulled from some of the DVD sets currently offered during the season these episodes were aired.

If that doesn't get you interested in looking, check this out:

Psychic Chip CoffeyImage via WikipediaChip Coffey's background research yielded very little on his psychic abilities, but what it did yield is that Coffey has an extensive background in .."acting."

Coffey has acted in over 150 roles on stage, and has been in many commercials no less. Oddly enough with such an extensive background in the theater, Coffey makes no mention of it on his LinkedIn page either. This is a professional networking site so you'd think..right?? Nope.

While none of these things "prove" this show is a fraud, it does prompt thorough looking into and of course your thoughts are welcome.. what say you? The reader?

Sy Fy's new show: Paranormal Witness

SciFi logoImage via Wikipedia

If you haven't tuned into this show, lets just say you're missing out. It actually makes sitting through Ghost Hunters all too often non eventful show (sorry guys) easier to watch. This show had me sitting on the edge of my seat throughout. It's the telling of real life ghost stories and paranormal experiences through the witnesses themselves and this format is far more engaging than some retold account. If you haven't tuned into Paranormal Witness on SyFy yet, by all means do so. It airs in my neck of the woods on Wednesdays @ 10 pm on the east coast. Check your local listings. This show is my new favorite!

Is Someone From Beyond Trying to Tell You Something?

A handheld infrared thermometer of the type us...Image via WikipediaOften, after you lose a close friend or family member, you will go through a period where you question everything. Nothing seems fair in life, therefore you begin to question your own beliefs. Is there a God? Is the Afterlife for real? Only time and your faith can answers those questions. There are the select few who are given a glimpse of what is beyond us on earth. Some may not even notice this gift that has been given to them. Some are truly aware of what doors have been opened.

A few months ago, I was watching one of my favorite paranormal television shows. I always start to think of my family members who have passed away. I wonder what they think of me, if they are proud of me... if they are even there to see me. I was all alone in my room, so I decided to play a little trick on myself. I keep an oscillating fan close to my bed because I like fresh air blowing on me. During the show, I glanced over to the fan and thought to myself... "if there is someone in here with me, how about do something... like turn off that fan". Within about 2 seconds, the fan turned off all by itself.

Was this a sign from beyond? I asked it to do it a second time, and it did not happen. Was there a glitch in the electricity or just coincidence? Had the fan's motor gotten hot and just shut off? Who knows. That question will never be answered. If you have strange occurances like this, please let us know. We would love to hear them. Soon, I will be trying different experiments to try and draw the energy of our angles to manifest in some way. I will use the same techniques that some of the paranormal investigators use. I will keep you  updated.

*******Unexplained Shadows

Ever sit in a room and feel like you are not alone? All of us have felt this way at different times. It seems like it happens more often after you have had a death in your family. I have had several incidences where shadows have crept around in my bedroom. Since the deaths of my two brothers and father in 2004, several unexplained things have occurred around me.

I often see shadows dart in and about my room. It is easy to tell when cars go by the window, and of course, the cars will reflect light. There are no trees in front of the window, so any shadow would be unexplained. I believe that these are the shadows of loved ones. It often occurs when I touched or moved something that belonged to my brother or father during that day.
An artist's impression of a shadow person.Image via WikipediaI have several personal items that belonged to them, and if I ever take them out to clean them or just move them, I can count on seeing a shadow that evening. Almost without fail.

*******Paranormal Experiences

Picture of Grant Wilson,Jason Hawes.Image via Wikipedia
Grant Wilson, Jason Hawes
We want your stories of the paranormal. If you watch many of the shows on television who try to debunk paranormal experiences are usually stretching it pretty far. Almost everyone you know has a story to tell. You may have one of your own.
Use the comment section to tell your story. The fact of the matter is that we are not alone and we are sometimes left to wander our past life. Call them ghosts or spirits, they are here to let us know that there is much more than what we see and hear.
Ever have the feeling that someone is standing next to you? You're not alone. Many people have experiences and do not even know it. Think that shadow is just a reflection? Maybe. But you can not blame them all on passing cars!
My sister and I started this blog to make people aware of the truth. We will provide information and stories of the paranormal. We have both had very personal experiences at different times in our lives. We are not alone and we are not afraid. Enjoy this blog and please contribute.
