The southern portion of the United States is no stranger to the paranormal. In fact, with the eastern states claiming some of the oldest cities in the country, there is no shortage of haunted locations. Add to that a history fraught with the bloody battles of the Civil war, and you no doubt have fine fodder for which the paranormal can flourish. This is tiny list of some of the numerous southern haunted locations.
Louisiana
New Orleans, Louisiana is by far one of the most reportedly active cities in the southern portion of the United States. With a long history of voodoo, murders, wars and the constant vortex of human driven passions both past and present you can bet there is plenty of paranormal activity to encounter.
Here are a few haunted places to consider visiting if you are a paranormal buff.
St. Louis Cemetery Number 1
Perhaps because it is the oldest cemetery in New Orleans is why St. Louis Cemetery is regarded as one of the most haunted locations throughout the south. Hauntingly beautiful in some regards, the cemetery has beautiful mausoleums, and many above ground tombs due to the high water table in New Orleans, it made sense to place the deceased above ground level. Visitors report hearing cries, seeing ghostly apparitions, many of which can be caught on film. Most famous of note is the revered Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. Those who believe say she makes regular appearances as a black cat in the cemetery with glaring red eyes.
Missippi
Waverly Mansion
Columbus, Mississippi is home to one of the most notorious haunted places not only in the south, but in the entire United States. In the east-central part of the state is a famous residence, known as The Waverly Mansion. Not to be confused with the Waverly Hills Sanatorium mind you, this home is an actual residence. Owned by Robert and Donna Snow, who were originally from Philadelphia, the Snows interest in the home led them to eventually purchase the mansion, in spite of hearing stories about the home being haunted. The home itself was in complete ruin and in need of years of renovation which the Snows did undertake. Built in 1852 the four story home was abandoned for five decades. The Snows reportedly did hear during reconstruction and renovations loud noises and the sound of a little girls voice but were somehow not deterred in their efforts to restore the home to its former grandeur. Mrs. Snow and her daughter have reported that there is a spirit of a little girl currently occupying the mansion. The grounds are also reportedly haunted by Major John Pytchlyn.
South Carolina
Medway Estate
Charleston South Carolina is often regarded as a piece of living history. There can be no pages written about the genesis of the United States without the mention of this old historical city. Originally named Charles Town in honor of King Charles the II, Charleston quickly became the epicenter for political, economical and social affairs in the south. The long history is no doubt the reason that this old city is known as one of the most haunted cities in the United States. One such place that gives rise to this distinction is The Medway Estate. The Medway estate is the oldest building in South Carolina. Jan Van Arrsens is the original builder of the home and reports indicate that the Dutchmen is still a resident. The home was built by Arrsens in 1686 for his wife. Reports indicate that the smell of his pipe can still be detected in the south bedroom of the home. There is also another resident in spirit at the home, though this spirit doesn't haunt the same bedroom but the north rooms located downstairs in the home. The story goes that this spirit is a female and the new bride of a young man that was tragically killed during a hunting trip. She has been seen waiting for him to come home in the window.

Fenwick Hall was the home of Ann Fenwick, the daughter of Lord Edward Fenwick. Going against her father's wishes, Ann Fenwick secretly married her true love, a stable worker. No doubt her father believed her to be marrying beneath her social standing. In the last years of Ann Fenwicks life, she grieved horribly over her deceased love and was said to wonder from room to room in the home pleading for his spirit to appear to her. Even though her tragic loss occurred over 250 years ago, it is said that during renovations to the home, the spirit of Ann Fenwick has reappeared and still waiting on the stair case in the East Parlor.
