According to Yahoo users on Yahoo Movies, the latest Paranormal Activity movie installation receives a mediocre score of 2.5 stars out of a possible 5 star rating. Bear in mind, this rating was tabulated by Yahoo Movies and was based on a fairly small number of reviews, 111 to be exact. Reviews range from stating it is the best of all of the Paranormal Activity movies so far, others claim it isn't even worth a one star rating.
Many reviewers that went to see the movie state that movie has “run it's course” and is out of steam. Some touted that the movie was more “funny” than frightening and some even suggested saving your money and watching it on video for free online. With so many disparaging remarks, one has to wonder exactly what went so wrong in this latest release.
There are assertions that the acting was substandard to begin with and that it lacked any real plot.
The public is getting smarter about what they will accept as scary and as they fine tune their idea of what is frightening, the movie makers will have to reach far into their bag of tricks to find viable scary scenarios that the viewer will buy into. We have to learn from the movies of the past as well. Movies like The Blair Witch Project, while fraught with all the typical error questions, like “how is that battery lasting so long on these cameras” to “Why would anyone destroy the map?”, we still found it realistic. The acting was believable to a degree and the local interviews of the towns people seemed so authentic.
If you saw any of the preceding Paranormal Activity movies, you too will no doubt find elements of the story that just flat out did not make sense.
Whether it was the atypical human response and reaction to the oddities that take place up to the final scene or the fact no one is willing to put the “camera down and run” there's definitely a few loops in the story. One thing is for certain, as the viewers expectations rise, so must the movie rise to the expectations. You simply can't bank on what worked yesterday, the formula has to grow and change, and become more, well, “real.”
